This month in the MAIN ATTRACTION MAG. We spotlight Jennifer Vaccari of Attitudes Salon. An upscale salon located in Apple Valley, CA.

During the interview the founder shared lots of candid “Attitude” with us, so sit back, grab yourself a Latte o’ something you like, and read about what it takes to be a great salon in today’s market place.

AI: How long have you been in the industry?
JV: I have been in the industry for 8 years and a salon owner for 5. In fact Attitudes is celebrating its 5th anniversary April 25th, 2010

AI: Where did you get your start?
JV: I started working in a salon as a receptionist, did that for about 2 years and decided to go to school. I had no idea it was something I would enjoy until I worked in a salon. It seemed like something I really liked. I worked with some great stylists that were very encouraging.

AI: What is your favorite part about being a stylist?
JV: I really love my clients! I like making them feel good and I enjoy getting caught up every couple of weeks on the ins and outs of their daily lives. I like to be creative and changing things up when permitted!

AI: Have you ever worked on a photo or movie set?
JV: Nope

AI: What is the most important aspect of your job?
JV: Listening, and communicating with the clients! Also it is very important to keep your education current and stay up to date with the new and up and coming styles.

AI: What have you experienced in the industry with the current economic situation?
JV: We have slowed down a bit. Thankfully people still need to have a professional look. Clients are spacing their appointments out a bit to save money and are cutting back on some of the products they purchase. Most are still with us through the long haul.

AI: What are your key strengths?
JV: Being a good listener. I think having a passion for what you do will always put you at the top of your game. Keeping family close to you at all times. I guess it would be the strong outer shell, but being a caring person. I try daily to keep everyone around me happy. I also realize that at times it is an impossible feat!

AI: Who is your Ideal client?
JV: Clients that are willing to listen to your recommendation and respect your training even if it isn’t what they want to hear. Also the clients that trust your judgment and understand that we only have their best interest in mind. There are stylists out there that will do whatever you ask, even if it’s the wrong thing for the integrity of your hair. Those are the ones to run from!

AI: What is the worst part of the job?
JV: Balancing EVERYTHING! Paying Bills! Always a positive Attitude is important. It is hard at times but I think it is Key to being successful. Trying to deal with the many personalities daily can be a real challenge as well.

AI: What are your ambitions?
JV: To be known as one of the best salons in our area. Knowing that you won’t be overcharged, or leave with something you’re not happy with. I have an amazing crew that works with me, and with the team all putting their heads together, we are very close to reaching that goal.

AI: Favorite food?
JV: The Prime Rib that one of my clients prepares for our annual Christmas Party! It’s amazing! And, My Husbands Chicken Cordon Blue, from scratch.

AI: What is your favorite pastime?
JV: Getting away to the river for some R&R! Or wine tasting. And riding my horse, spending time with the Family is also big.

AI: Do you have a favorite band, listen while you work?
JV: Trying to listen to music at work is hard with all the conversations going on around you and blow dryers. We just turn on the radio and at times catch a song here and there! My personal favorite band is and always will be The Eagles! Going to Hollywood next week to see them in concert, and going again next month in Ontario. Did I mention that I have already seen them in concert 5 times before next week?

AI: Any suggestions for those looking to get into the industry?
JV: Patients. It takes a good 2 to 3 years to have an established cliental. Find a reputable school. Not always the most expensive. Understanding that you learn so much about the daily aspects of working with clients after school, when actually working in a salon. It is always a good idea to be an assistant and gain confidence. Pick every ones brain around you. Be open minded. There are many techniques, just find the one that best fits your style.

AI: What is the most important aspects to stress to those looking for a salon or stylist?
JV: If someone sees a haircut or color that they like…..ask that person where they go. Sometimes sitting in the salon and observing the work is a good way to feel comfortable. Word of mouth is the strongest way to find a good salon. Looking around to make sure it is a clean environment and that the stylists are using good color lines and good hair care products. If a salon has 20 different hair care lines it is doubtful that they are educated on what is on the shelves. If they limit the lines, there is a good chance they can recommend what is truly right for your unique situation.

AI: Anything to add in closing?
JV: Attitude isn’t always a bad thing! A new Attitude can make you a new person and ready to face the world head on!! I truly love what I do and enjoy each and every one of my clients!
